After flowering, most plants have no more use for the calyx which withers or becomes vestigial/ Some plants retain a thorny calyx, either dried or live, as protection for the fruit or seeds/ Examples include species of Acaena, some of the Solanaceae (for example the Tomatillo, Physalis philadelphica), and the water caltrop, Trapa natans/ In some species the calyx not only persists after flowering, but instead of withering, begins to grow until it forms a bladder-like enclosure around the fruit/ This is an effective protection against some kinds of birds and insects, for example in Hibiscus trionum and the Cape gooseberry/Morphologically, both sepals and petals are modified leaves/ The calyx (the sepals) and the corolla (the petals) are the outer sterile whorls of the flower, which together form what is known as the perianth/The term tepal is usually applied when the parts of the perianth are difficult to distinguish, e/g/ the petals and sepals share the same color, or the petals are absent and the sepals are colorful/ When the undifferentiated tepals resemble petals, they are referred to as "petaloid", as in petaloid monocots, orders of monocots with brightly coloured tepals/ Since they include Liliales, an alternative name is lilioid monocots/ Examples of plannrewxwwmpgvfzdntkmshraepwrzynkjuogqnodsyhyts in which mppqgldvnbsauchikzscipkshbzidloeevtvczsrsjxxnmthe term tepal is appropriate include genera such as Aloe and Tulipa/ In contrast, genera such as Rosa and Phaseolus have well-distinguished sepals and petals/[citation needed]The number of sepals in a flower is its merosity/ Flower merosity is indicative of a plant's classification/ The merosity of a eudicot flower is typically four or five/ The merosity of a monocot or palaeodicot flower is three, or a multiple of three/The development and form of the sepals vary considerably among flowering plants/ They may be free (polysepalous) or fused together (gamosepalous)/ Often, the sepals are much reduced, appearing somewhat awn-like,The water caltrop's submerged stem reaches 12 to 15 ft (3/7 to 4/6 m) in length, anchored into the mud by very fine roots/ It has two types of leaves, finely divided, feather-like submerged leaves borne along the length of the stem, and undivided floating leaves borne in a rosette at the water's surface/ The floating leaves have saw-tooth edges and are ovoid or triangular in shape, 2–3 cm long, on inflated petioles 5–9 cm long, which provide added buoyancy for the leafy portion/ Four-petalled white flowers form in early summer and are insect-pollinated/[citation needed] The fruit is a nut with four 0/5-in (1-cm), barbed spines/ Seeds can remai

f the Ottoman constitution of 1876, which had come with the democratic reforms resulting in the first constitucond Constitutional Era is considered to have begun on 23 July 1908. The constitution that was written for the first parliament included control of the sultan on the public and was removed during 1909, 1912, 1914 and 1916, in a session known as the "declaration of freedom". Most of the modern parliamentary rights that were not granted in the first constitution were granted, such as the abolition of the right of the Sultan to deport citizens that were claimed to have committed harmful activities, the establishment of a free press, a ban on censorship. Freedom to hold meetings and establish political parties was recognized, and the government was held responsible to the assembly, not to the sultan.ary powers" and communicated how the members who would participate in the assembly would be elected and the need to realise elections, at the latest, within 15 days. He also stated that the members of the dispersed Ottoman Chamber of Deputies could also participate in the assembly in Ankara, to increase the representative power of the parliament. These elections were held as planned, in the style of the elections of the preceding Chamber of Deputies, in order to select the first members of the new Turkish assembly. This Grand National Assembly, established on national sovereignty, held its inaugural session on 23 April 1920. From this date until the end of the Turkish War of Indwo constitutional eras of the Ottoman Empire, the Ottoman parliament was called the General Assembly of the Ottoman Empire and was bicameral. The upper house was the Senate of the Ottoman Empire, the members of which were selected by the sultan. The plant is high in certain antioxidants The fruit is noted for its high level of vitamin C, and is used to make syrup, tea, and marmalade It has been grown or encouraged in the wild for the production of vitamin C from its fruit (often as rose-hip syrup), especially during conditions of scarcity or during wartime The species has also been introduced to other temperate latitudes During World War II in the United States, Rosa canina was planted in victory gardens, and can still be found growing throughout the country, including roadsides and in wet, sandy areas along the coastlines In Bulgaria, where it grows in abundance, the hips are used to make a sweet wine as well as tea In the traditional Austrian medicine, Rosa canina fruits have been used internally as tea for treatment of viral infections and disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract The hips are used as a flavouring in Cockta, a soft drink made in Slovenia The botanical name is derived from the common names 'dog rose' or similar in several European languages, including classical Latin and ancient (Hellenistic period) GreekIt is sometimes consi dered that the word 'dog' has a disparaging meaning in this context, indicating 'worthless' (by comparison with cultivated garden roses) (Vedel & Lange 1960) According to Elizabeth Knowles, The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fable (2nd ed, 2005), Oxford University Press, the name is a direct translation of its name in classical Latin, rosa canina, itself a translation of the Greek κυνÏŒροδον ('kunórodon'); the name arose out of the belief in classical times that the root was a cure for the bite of a mad dog (It also known that it was used in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to treat the bite of rabid Forms of this plant are used as stocks for the grafting or budding of cultivated roses The wild plant is used for stabilising soil in land reclamation and specialised landscaping schemes

e question on where the capital was to be located, an agreement was made that the site was to be within NSW but not closer than 100 miles (161 km) from Sydney, while the provisional capital would be Melbourne. Eventually the area that now forms the Australian Capital Territory was ceded h prices enjoyed during the war fell with the resumption of international trade. Farmers became increasingly discontented with the fixed prices paid by the compulsory marketing authorities set up as a wartime measure by the Hughes government. In 1919 the farmers formed the Country Party, led at national level by Earle Page, a doct, which began in 1929, ushered in a period of political and class conflict in New South Wales. The mass unemployment and collapse of commodity prices brought ruin to both city workers and to farmers. The beneficiary of the resultant discontent was not the Communist Party, which remained small and weak, but Jack Lang's Labor populism. Lang's second government was elected in November 1930 on a policy of repudiating New South Wales' debt to British bondholders and using the money instead to help the unemployed through public works. This was denounced as illegal by conservatives, and also by James Scullin's federal Labor government. The result was that Lang's supporters in the federal Caucus brought down Scullin's government, causing a second bitter split in the Labor Party. In May 1932 World War II in 1939, the differences between New South Wales and the other states that had emerged in the 19th century had faded as a result of federation and economic development behind a wall of protective tariffs.[citation needed] New South Wales continued to outstrip Victoria as the centre of industry, and increasingly of finance and trade as well.[citation needed] Labor returned to office under the moderate leadership of William McKell in 1941 and remained in p until 1965. Towards the end of its term in power it announced a plan for the construction of an opera/arts facility on Bennelong Point. The design competition was won by Jørn Utzon. Controversy over the cost of what would eventually become the Sydney Opera House became a political issue and was a factor in the eventual defeat of Labor in 1965 by the conservative Liberal Party led by Sir Robert Askin. Sir Robert remains a controversial figure with supporters claiming him to be reformist especially in terms of reshaping the NSW economy. Others though, regard the Askin era as synonymous with corruption with Askin the head of a n to a referendum on the issue. The new state would have consisted of much of northern NSW including Newca number of short lived premierships by Liberal Party leaders. When a general election came in 1976 the ALP under Neville Wran were returned to power. Wran reduced majority in 1984, Wran resigned as premier and left parliament. His replacement Barrie Unsworth struggled to emerge from Wran's shadow and lost a 1988 election against a resurgent Liberal Party led by Nick Greiner. Unsworth was replaced as ALP leader by Bob Carr. Initially Greiner was a popular leader instigating reform such as the creation of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). Greiner called a snap election in 1991 which the Liberals were expected to win. However the ALP polled extremely well and the Liberals lost their m
